Any precious metal that has been minted by a federal agency in a country, if kept reserved as an object of investment is called a bullion coin. Such coins are not used in the everyday trading of commerce in that country. Worldwide, these are in gold and silver, except for the Kruggerrand and the Swiss Vreneli which are produced only in gold. In the US, this in the series called as The American Eagle are available in all the three types of precious metals -silver, gold and platinum. These are also available in different weights or measures. The unit of weight and multiples of which they are available is one troy ounce. Limited editions and very rarely struck in kilograms or more. The place where you can buy bullion coins is the commodities exchanges of your country. Generally, the bullion coins sell well, over and above the price at which they are bought in the commodities exchanges.
The reason is that compared to the large volumes that are traded in the commodities exchanges, this are of much lesser quantity and there is much demand for these. Therefore, less supply demands greater price. Thus the bullion coins are worth every ounce of metal they are struck on! Besides, the cost of manufacturing these midget bullion coins is very minimal. The storage and distribution is also very cohesive. As more and more small time investors want to make a start in investing in small quantities, bullion coins are the best bet to begin a net-worthy asset, considering the unbelievable price growth of bullion in the last four to five years.
