Ouch. I understand. I’ve been there…. Now get over it.
No, really, if you want to make a change and improve your current situation you have to get over it. Too often I hear the Eeyores of the world saying; ‘I just can’t get ahead.’ ‘Always gonna be in debt.’ ‘Good thing I have my J.O.B.’
As long as you think like that and talk like that, you will always be THAT. But if you truly do want to improve your situation, if you do want to get your life back, you need to change the way you are thinking and the way you are acting.
Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” If we want to move forward we have to change.
So how do we make these changes? There are plenty of people that tell us we have to change how we think and how we act, but how do we actually do that?
First, if we can, we must understand where these limiting, destructive habits and beliefs come from.
T. Harv Eker, author of Secrets of the Millionaire Mind and motivational speaker, describes our financial blueprint as a result of our past programming. This means that the things we heard when growing up, the things we experienced, and the things we were taught all contribute to how we view and look at the world around us.
‘Money is the root of all evil’, ‘the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer’, ‘Money doesn’t grow on trees’…. and so many more. Do any of these sound familiar? Did you hear them growing up? Who from? These get into our heads and become the foundation on which we relate to money.
How can you have wealth if you can’t respect the wealthy?
What was the financial atmosphere of your household? Was there stress around paying bills? Were there arguments about money? How did it make you feel?
Imagine growing up in a household where bill paying time was known as a time to avoid mom and dad at all costs. You just knew there was going to be arguing and short tempers and you wanted none of it.
Now fast forward to your young adult life when you are finally out on your own and you have your own bills that start flowing in, but you find yourself putting off paying them and they start to pile-up on your counter. It isn’t long before you are behind on your bills and now you really want to ignore them for fear of what you will find.
This was an example from my own life. My programming led me to think of the stressful times when my parents were paying bills, which led me to feel stress and anxiety, which kept me from paying my bills, which eventually led to late and unpaid bills. Even shut off utilities!
Understanding this process and where my programming came from gave me the opportunity to realize that I wasn’t my parents. I had a choice to take different action, and taking that action lead to different results and a whole lot brighter future.
I encourage you to reflect on some of the things that may be holding you back and see if it helps you to create some better habits. To create better habits, surround yourself with the things that contribute to programming; listen to motivational audios and CDs, seek out someone who is winning with money and learn from them, and begin to take the actions of a winner yourself.
The best place to start is right where you are.
