When she suffers losses – she has emotional tantrums and I'm assuming things are good becuz she's been shopping up a storm lately.
Is day trading a reliable stable source of income ? Is it a legitimate career ? do you think it's like gambling ?
Suggestion:
are you sure her shopping cash came from stocks and not a loan ? there are a number of really good trading psychology books that could help her get a grip with her stress by Brett Steenbarger,John Carter,John Hayden etc,
regarding the stock markets – its just a matter of shorting when they are in a down trend…

no more gambling than investing in general. but i wouldnt use it as a primary source of income, mabye if you wanted to make a few dollars here and there but that is not a career.
Not like gambling since you have control over what, when and how much to pay. Yes it is if you do your research, have the money to spare and do not get greedy. Yes some people do become addicted and throw caution to the wind and fail to do the proper research
It sounds like she is letting her emotions get the best of her and she will not succeed in the end. Unless she can get a grip and use her brain more than her emotions it will not become a legitimate career.
